This is the last in my series of posts showing just four pictures of a small garden month by month throughout the year. The dynamic character of plants and especially perennials is central to my garden design mantra. Every month a garden changes reflecting the seasons and the aspirations of its owners.
A perennial meadow is created using a limited pallet of plants that together form a coherent unit of vegetation that includes theme plants that flower in a sequence from spring through to autumn. In this way, colour and flower interest is provided over as long a period as possible.

As well as my series of eBooks which explain the ideas and practices of this approach to naturalistic planting for smaller gardens, I have just finished recording a series of lessons for MyGardenSchool which will become available as a new online course next spring – New Style Perennial Plantin For Today’s Gardens. Anyone really interested, might think about following my other course on planting and designing with ornamental grasses which provides a very good introduction to the plants and ideas that have lead me to develop my approach to creating perennial meadows. After-all, winter is the best time to make plans for next year’s garden adventures.
